China: Mushroom-themed tourism peaks in SW China's Yunnan
[Voiceover] It's peak mushroom season in southwest China's Yunnan province, which means express mushroom deliveries and mushroom-themed tourism are also in peak season. Known as the "kingdom of wild fungi", Yunnan breeds about 900 varieties of edible wild mushrooms, accounting for over 90 percent of the national total. At the famous Mushuihua Wild Edible Mushroom Market in the provincial capital Kunming, the manager of an express delivery outlet says they send more than 3,000 fresh mushroom parcels every day. [Soundbite] Yuan Xiaobo, manager, express delivery outlet: "At least four trucks depart here every day, carrying nearly 10 tons of mushrooms. This represents a nearly 20-percent year-on-year growth." [Voiceover] Online travel platforms are reporting a surge in searches for mushroom recipes, mushroom markets, and mushroom guides who can help identify the fungi. As a result, travel agencies are rolling out mushroom-themed tours. Hotels and homestays in Yunnan, meanwhile, are also rolling out mushroom themed deals with many saying they're already at full capacity. [Soundbite] Li Tiaotiao, homestay owner: "With more customers traveling here for wild mushrooms, our occupancy rate has surged by 35.8 percent year-on-year. The figure is nearing 90 percent during the summer vacation." [Voiceover] Yunnan's mushroom season generally lasts from late May to September, with July being peak mushroom season.
