Passengers were left panicking when a phone charger caught on fire during a flight to Amsterdam.

The power bank inside the overhead luggage compartment erupted in flames, emitting thick smoke mid-air during a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight on August 7.

Footage captured by Brazilian journalist Simone Malagoli shows travellers aboard a Boeing 777 covering their noses with scarves, pillows, and blankets while attendants extinguish the blaze.

Flight KL792, which departed from Sao Paulo, Brazil continued its route and safely landed at Amsterdam Schiphol International Airport on time.

Simone said: 'It was one of the tensest flights of my life—perhaps the most.'

No one was reportedly injured in the incident.

Lithium batteries, like those embedded in power banks, have been linked to numerous fire-related emergencies on planes.

When a lithium battery fails, it can undergo thermal runaway, a rapid, violent reaction in which one or more cells rupture. This process releases toxic, flammable, and explosive gases, creating an intense, self-sustaining fire that is extremely difficult to extinguish in flight.
