GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - AUGUST 8: A 16-year-old Palestinian boy was severely injured after an aid package airdropped into Gaza struck his home, underscoring growing concerns over the dangers of uncontrolled humanitarian airdrops in the besieged enclave.
Karim Al-Kahlout sustained life-threatening head injuries when a heavy aid box crashed through his residence on Al-Jalaa Street in Gaza City on Friday. He remains in intensive care at Al-Ma'mdani Hospital. At the time of the incident, he was reportedly fetching water for his injured father.
The accident has reignited criticism of airdrops as a flawed aid-delivery method, with reports of at least 1,772 Palestinians killed and 12,249 injured since late May while seeking humanitarian assistance. In the past 24 hours alone, 16 more Palestinians died in aid-related incidents, according to local authorities.
On Friday, Aug. 8, Karim’s father told Anadolu: “The airdrops have become a tool of humiliation for us. Their harm outweighs their benefit, as homes and residential neighborhoods have become targets for aid boxes falling on people’s heads. We demand the opening of crossings and the entry of aid in a safe manner. My son was my support—he helped me with everything.”
The Gaza Health Ministry reported Friday that Israel’s military offensive has killed 61,330 Palestinians since October 2023, including 201 deaths from starvation—among them 98 children. Four new famine-related fatalities were recorded in the past day.
Over the last 24 hours, 72 bodies and 314 wounded were brought to overwhelmed hospitals, raising the total injury count to 152,359.
The ministry warned that countless victims remain trapped under rubble or unreachable due to relentless bombardment and equipment shortages.
Gaza remains under a near-total blockade, with Israel restricting land crossings and aid convoys. The UN and rights groups have repeatedly condemned the humanitarian catastrophe, accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war—a claim Tel Aviv denies.
