VARIOUS OF IRAQI PEOPLE MARCHING FROM NAJAF TO KARBALA FOR ARBAEEN COMMEMORATIONS, HOLDING FLAGS AND CARRYING THEIR BELONGINGS / SOME SITTING AND RESTING BY ROADSIDE NAJAF, IRAQ - AUGUST 9: Thousands of people from southern Iraqi provinces marched through the city of Najaf on Saturday on their way to Karbala for the “Arbaeen” commemorations, marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, and his 72 companions.

The pilgrims are heading toward the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas in Karbala.

The annual pilgrimage is among the largest public gatherings in the world, with devotees walking from various Iraqi cities, including Najaf, to the holy sites.

Arbaeen falls on the 20th day of Safar in the Islamic calendar, forty days after Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his companions in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.
