GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - AUGUST 9: Thousands of demonstrators gathered in Geneva on Saturday, Aug. 9, to protest the worsening famine in Gaza, holding Israel responsible for the humanitarian crisis.
The protesters assembled at the English Garden, a central location in the Swiss city, before staging a sit-in on the adjacent main road. Later, they marched across the Mont Blanc Bridge and through downtown Geneva for hours, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans against Israel in English, French, and Arabic.
In a striking display of protest, participants banged spoons against empty pots and pans, symbolizing the starvation in Gaza, which they attribute to Israeli restrictions. Many called for a boycott of Israel and criticized the Swiss government for its cooperation with Tel Aviv.
One British protester, Mireiia Bruno, described the famine in Gaza as a horrific situation comparable to crises in Yemen and Sudan, emphasizing that people have a fundamental right to live in peace. She stressed that children in Gaza are particularly vulnerable, facing death from hunger due to the blockade.
A Swiss participant named Nikles characterized the situation in Gaza as an organized genocide, stating his presence at the protest was an act of solidarity with Palestinians enduring daily suffering. He added that he wanted his children to witness the reality in Gaza and understand the need to respond to such injustices.
At least 61,369 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry reported that 11 people, including children, have died in the past 24 hours due to famine and malnutrition. This brings the total death toll from starvation to 212, among them 98 children, as the humanitarian crisis in the enclave deepens.
