FEMALE DEMONSTRATOR WHO GAVE HER NAME AS NASTASJA SPEAKING TO REPORTER (German) 3. MALE DEMONSTRATOR FROM ASSOCIATION JEWISH VOICE FOR JUST PEACE IN MIDDLE EAST, THOMAS SPEAKING TO REPORTER (German)BERLIN, GERMANY - AUGUST 9: Hundreds of people gathered in the German capital on Saturday to show support for Palestine and protest against Israel’s military actions in Gaza. The demonstration took place at the intersection of Friedrich and Zimmer streets in the Mitte district. Protesters carried signs reading “Stop the genocide in the Gaza Strip,” “Freedom for Palestine,” “We oppose annihilation,” “Your silence is killing,” and “Stop starving Gaza.” Demonstrators also criticized the German government for supporting Israel, banging pots and pans to draw attention to what they described as a hunger crisis caused by restrictions on aid deliveries to Gaza. One protester, who gave her name as Nastasja, told that there was no reason to remain silent in the face of Israel’s actions. She called the government’s suspension of certain arms exports to Israel “window dressing,” saying many approved shipments would still go ahead. She also noted Israel’s attacks on Lebanon and Syria, describing the announcement as a delaying tactic. Thomas, from the association Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East, accused German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of lying, claiming that only unapproved shipments had been halted and that approved deliveries would continue. He criticized the policy for applying only to weapons used directly in Gaza and not to bombs dropped on Lebanon and Syria. A small pro-Israel group staged a counter-demonstration nearby, waving Israeli flags. Police maintained a heavy security presence in the area. Israel has been facing mounting outrage over its deadly war on Gaza, where more than 61,300 people have been killed since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
