Eight arrested as police raid Korean-Chinese call centre ring in Thailand
Eight suspected scammers were arrested as police raided a Korean-Chinese call centre ring at a housing estate in Thailand.
The gang reportedly ran an illegal loan shark and call centre scam from a two-storey commercial building in the Bang Lamung district of Pattaya.
Police raided the property and two residences after a Korean suspected gang member turned on his colleagues and reported them to the police.
Officers detained six Korean men, a Korean woman, and a Chinese man, who reportedly admitted to being scammers. Seventeen personal computers and laptops, 15 mobile phones, and an internet router were also seized.
Officials named the suspects as Korean men Damsik Lee, 24, Joon Mo Ye, 36, Sungeun Lee, 34, Soonbum Park, 2, Jindong Lim, 31, and Sangwoo Park, 21, Chinese man Linhao Tian, 23, and Korean woman Jiyoung Lee, 25.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Torlarp Tinamat, Chief of Pattaya Tourist Police, said: 'All suspects admitted to working in the call centre scam operation. We arrested them and handed them over to Chonburi Immigration to revoke their visas and carry out relevant procedures.
‘As for the seized items, we handed them over to the inquiry officer of Huay Yai Police Station for further legal action.'
The primary office was the two-storey building, which was divided into 10 glass-partitioned rooms equipped with computers, phones, and other equipment. The suspects allegedly tricked victims into believing they were government workers.
A large room designated as the command centre was also found.
The raid came after Korean man Hyunsub An, 31, sought help from the Korean embassy on Wednesday evening, claiming he was assaulted by his own colleagues.
Authorities found the badly beaten tourist in a detached house in Na Jomtien. He had face and head injuries, strangulation marks on his neck, and bruises across his body.
Hyunsub was reportedly relieved when police rescued him. However, he was later found to be connected to a Pattaya-based Korean loan shark gang dismantled by police on June 21.
