GUEYE RIDING HORSE ON BEACH WHILE HOLDING PALESTINIAN FLAG DAKAR, SENEGAL - AUGUST 11: On Monday, August 11, performance artist Thierno Gueye rode a horse along Dakar’s Yoff Beach in solidarity with Gaza. The event began with a traditional “Ndeup” ritual of the Lebu ethnic group, intended to heal spiritual or psychological ailments. Gueye performed the ritual on the sand and sang Wolof laments before mounting his horse and carrying a Palestinian flag along the shoreline. Speaking to Anadolu, Gueye said Senegal has always stood with Palestine and that he wanted to draw attention to the suffering of Palestinians, especially children in Gaza. Senegal has supported Palestine since the 1960s, serving as chair of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People since 1975. The country was among the first African nations to host a Palestinian diplomatic mission and has long been considered one of Palestine’s closest allies on the continent. The performance comes as Israel is facing mounting condemnation for its genocidal war on Gaza, where it has killed more than 61,400 people since October 2023. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
