This is what the anchor chain locker of a container ship looks like
Fascinating footage shows the inside of the chain locker onboard the Jork Ruler container ship.
The filmer, Kym Amaro, explained that the chain locker is at the front of the vessel, just behind the bow and directly below the windlass.
He added: 'It's part of the duty of ratings on ship, often done every time we heave up anchor, our duty is to properly pile the chain evenly and to prevent it from reaching the top celling of the chain locker, so the anchor will properly home.'
The locker stores the chain, which is attached to the anchor. The compartment is coated to resist saltwater corrosion, because the chain is wet when it comes in.
The chain locker is checked before and after anchoring. There are also pre-departure checks. It has maintenance about once a month and a formal safety inspection quarterly.
The Jork Ruler has a gross tonnage of 7,852 and a deadweight of 9,300 tonnes. The vessel is a feeder-class container ship owned and operated by Becker B Shipmanagement.
