Many residents sought relief in the early hours by heading to beaches and public fountains, while authorities issued heat alerts urging the public to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak temperatures. The Barcelona City Council activated its “Plan Calor” emergency protocol, deploying extra resources to support vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and those without access to air conditioning. The Catalan fire service raised its wildfire risk to the highest level, placing 109 municipalities under extreme alert due to soaring temperatures, low humidity and strong winds. Even Barcelona Zoo took special measures to protect animals, including misting systems, shaded enclosures and frozen treats to keep them cool. Meteorologists warned the heat wave is expected to persist, with more uncomfortably warm nights ahead, posing ongoing risks to public health and safety.
