PEOPLE RELEASING WHITE BALLOONS BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - AUGUST 11: Colombian Senator and presidential pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay has died at the age of 39, two months after being shot in the head during a campaign rally in Bogotá. Uribe, a member of the conservative Democratic Centre party, was critically wounded in the June 7 attack while campaigning for his party’s nomination in the 2026 presidential elections. Despite extensive medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday, August 11. His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed his death in a social media post, writing, "I ask God to show me the way to learn to live without you." Following the news of his death, supporters gathered at the site of the attack in western Bogotá to hold a vigil, paying tribute to the late senator with prayers and expressions of grief. Miguel Uribe Turbay, who served in the Colombian Senate since 2022, was a prominent figure in the right-wing opposition and a vocal critic of the current leftist government led by President Gustavo Petro. He was also closely associated with former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez and was seen as a rising young leader within the opposition. The late senator came from a prominent political family, being the grandson of former President Julio César Turbay Ayala.
