On the evening of August 9 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, residents spotted a large amount of white foam in the Baita River in Hunnan District.

Video footage showed masses of white, clumped foam floating downstream, eventually covering nearly the entire river surface.

Following an investigation, Shenyang’s environmental authorities identified the cause: upstream, a household cleaning products factory had stored raw materials for liquid soap (with foaming properties) on the river-facing side of its premises. Due to poor storage, some of the material entered the river and, after being churned by a small dam, produced the large volume of foam.

Water quality tests revealed that the concentration of anionic surfactants (a signature indicator for detergents) in the affected section exceeded the standard by 0.38 times.

That night, Hunnan District crews cleared the foam from the river, completing cleanup by the early hours of August 10.

Police are working with environmental authorities to launch an investigation into the company involved.
