Flights were delayed as rain flooded the airport in Mexico City.

Footage from inside the Benito Juarez International Airport terminal shows the floor covered in water, with yellow caution signs placed to warn travellers of slippery conditions on Sunday, August 10.

Passengers were seen wading through the water and gathering in groups, assessing the situation and waiting for updates.

Airport officials issued a statement around 9 pm local time, saying that due to heavy rainfall in the afternoon and reports of low visibility, the aeronautical authority has suspended landing and takeoff operations for the next three hours.

Authorities added: 'This will allow for the removal of rainwater that has caused flooding, enabling the restoration of operational capacity.'

Benito Juarez International Airport is one of the city's two main international airports and is among the busiest in Latin America, serving an estimated 45.4 million passengers in 2024.

The intense rainfall also caused severe flooding on major roads throughout Mexico City, with water levels reaching up to 50 centimetres (19 inches) in some areas, further complicating travel and transportation across the capital.
