PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO - AUGUST 12: Wildfires continue to spread uncontrollably across Montenegro, prompting the government to request international assistance as emergency teams struggle to contain the blazes amid extreme heat and strong winds.

The fires have erupted in multiple regions, including the capital Podgorica, as well as Nikšić, Bijelo Polje, Cetinje, and Buljarica. Authorities warn that gusty winds have fueled the flames, pushing them dangerously close to residential areas.

The Montenegrin Interior Ministry confirmed on Tuesday, Aug. 12, that active fires are still burning in Podgorica, Budva, Bar, Nikšić, Šavnik, and Bijelo Polje. The government has formally sought aid through NATO, calling for support from neighboring countries and the international community.

In response, Serbia has deployed helicopters to assist in aerial firefighting operations, while Croatia has sent firefighting aircraft to help combat the flames.

Montenegro has declared a red alert due to scorching temperatures, which have persisted for days, exacerbating fire risks.

The wildfires in Montenegro are part of a broader crisis affecting the Balkans, where soaring temperatures and dry conditions have sparked numerous fires.
