Cádiz, Spain - August 11, 2025 Atlanterra, Spain – A fierce wildfire near Tarifa has forced over 2,000 people to evacuate from Atlanterra, including homes, hotels, and the Playa de los Alemanes. The blaze, fueled by a heatwave and strong levante winds, sent thick smoke billowing from the mountains as helicopters worked urgently to contain the fire. The fire has come dangerously close to residential areas, prompting scenes of evacuation captured by Gemma Añino. Traffic snarled as emergency vehicles, including Guardia Civil cars, rushed to assist. Many evacuees have had to spend the night outdoors or seek refuge at a local school in Zahara de los Atunes. This wildfire threatens culturally important sites, such as caves housing priceless rupestrian paintings, raising concerns about irreversible damage. The blaze erupted shortly after another major wildfire in Tarifa was declared extinguished only a day earlier, underscoring the region’s heightened fire risk during this hot, windy period. Gemma Añino reported, “The fire has reached Atlanterra, and houses have been burned. People are being evacuated and moving toward Zahara and Barbate.” Authorities continue battling the fire amid ongoing evacuations, with hopes to prevent further destruction and protect residents.
