Teen on scooter hit by tram then fined thousands for damages
A teenager riding an electric scooter across a pedestrian crossing while wearing headphones was hit by a tram and fined thousands for the damage.
Footage shows the light rail vehicle travelling along tracks between two carriageways as the 19-year-old crosses one side of the road near the Electrical Department of the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Poland.
Despite the approaching streetcar, he continues riding and begins to slow down, but fails to stop before reaching the tracks.
The vehicle's windscreen shatters on impact as bystanders turn to look.
Szczecin City Hall said the rider was 'very lucky' to escape unharmed, crediting the tram driver's quick braking on Wednesday afternoon, August 6.
The public transport vehicle sustained damage to its windscreen and bumper, with repairs estimated to cost over PLN 10,000 (GBP 2,033).
Officials said Tramwaje Szczecinskie intends to take legal action against the rider to recover the repair costs.
Spokesman Wojciech Jachim said the teen was wearing headphones, which is 'probably why he did not react to the tram' despite the driver ringing the warning bell.
Police confirmed the rider was found at fault for the crash and, in addition to the civil claim, was fined PLN 1,020 (GBP 207).
