A passenger was dragged off a plane when she allegedly started fighting with the cabin crew because they asked her to turn off her phone.

The woman, identified by local media as Comfort Emmanson, reportedly ignored the cabin crew and refused to switch off the device, insisting she could keep it in flight mode.

Emmanson, wearing a light blue top and black trousers, then stood in the doorway and struck a flight attendant at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria.

The irate traveller then returned inside the plane and continued yelling.

Footage shows airport officers forcefully removing Emmanson from the Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft. She clung to a curtain as three responders dragged her off, during which her clothes were torn, exposing her breasts, while she was pulled down the stairs.

Ground staff and security personnel surrounded her as she was given a white jacket and continued to throw a tantrum before being escorted onto an airport bus. She appeared to be struggling with a wig that had come loose during the scuffle.

Local media reported that Emmanson erupted in 'runway rage' before takeoff on the Ibom Air flight to the capital Lagos from the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo on Sunday, August 10.

The flight continued, but the argument persisted when the plane landed. The passenger then attacked the air hostess.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), said the confrontation stemmed from the passenger's refusal to follow crew instructions.

He urged travellers to respect cabin crew directives, especially routine safety procedures like switching off mobile devices during takeoff and landing.

Mr Achimugu said: 'When cabin crew ask you to turn off your phone before takeoff or landing, simply comply. I can't understand why simple routine issues would lead to incidents like this. Passengers need to understand they have responsibilities, not just rights.'

Ibom Air has since imposed a travel ban on Emmanson, stating she is no longer permitted to fly on any of its aircraft.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the handling of the incident.

They said: 'The NBA demands that Ibom Air immediately withdraw the lifetime ban, issue a public apology to Ms. Emmanson, and cooperate fully with an impartial investigation into this incident. We also call on the Minister for Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, and relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough inquiry, sanction all those found culpable, and enforce strict compliance with established standards for the humane treatment of air passengers.'

Flight rules state that turning off electronic devices during critical phases of flight is necessary because they can interfere with aircraft communication and navigation systems.

The incident came just days after the NCAA banned musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as KWAM1, from flying over alleged misconduct.

Note: A previous version of this story stated that the confrontation was recorded at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo. However, while the initial argument started at that point, the physical altercation happened when the plane had landed at the Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
