-BATKEN, KYRGYZSTAN — AUG. 13, 2025 — RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT "BATKEN MUNICIPALITY" HANDOUT — EDITORIAL USE ONLY — Kyrgyzstan has begun installing barbed wire along its border with Tajikistan in the Batken region, authorities said Wednesday, Aug. 13, following the implementation of a historic border agreement. The Batken Municipality reported that the work completed so far includes a 74-kilometer trench, 68 kilometers of iron poles, and 62 kilometers of barbed wire. The nearly 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border has long been a flashpoint for tensions between the Central Asian neighbors. In March, the presidents of both countries signed an agreement resolving the decades-long dispute, marking a significant step toward lasting peace in the region.
