Boeing 747 wing hits runway while landing during typhoon in Taiwan
This is the shocking moment a Boeing 747 freighter's wing struck the runway during landing in Taipei, creating sparks that lit up the tarmac as the plane made contact.
The United Parcel Service (UPS) Express cargo flight 5X61 departed from Hong Kong-Chek Lap Kok International Airport (HKG) at 09:50 UTC, bound for Taipei–Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on August 13.
The jumbo jet, registered N613UP, reportedly arrived during a period of gusty winds brought by Typhoon Podul.
Due to the prevailing weather conditions, the plane conducted three approaches to runway 05L before successfully landing.
An incident report from the Aviation Safety Network stated: 'UPS flight 5X61, a Boeing 747-8F, suffered an engine pod strike during a night-time landing on runway 05L at Taipei-Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).
'At the time of arrival, strong gusting winds with windshear associated with Typhoon Podul were reported at TPE. At 11:20 UTC, the flight aborted the approach to runway 05L and executed a go-around. The aircraft was positioned for another approach, which was also aborted.
'At 12:08 UTC, the aircraft landed after the third approach and taxied to the apron. Photos after the incident show a cowling had separated from the engine.'
Dramatic footage shows the aircraft touching down, with its right wing lowering enough for the outboard engine to briefly contact the runway, creating a burst of sparks.
The aircraft completed its rollout without further incident and taxied to the apron. Officials confirmed that Engine #4 sustained damage to its nacelle.
No injuries were reported. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Typhoon Podul swept across southern Taiwan, bringing wind speeds of up to 191 kph (118 mph). The system triggered widespread closures across the island and led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
The Central Weather Administration reported that Podul made landfall in the southeastern city of Taitung at around 1 pm local time. The typhoon then moved across Taiwan's southern tip before entering the Taiwan Strait around three hours later.
Authorities said that more than 8,000 residents were evacuated as a safety measure. One person remains missing, and at least 112 injuries have been reported.
