Dozens of tourists evacuated as fire starts at hotel in Bangkok
Dozens of tourists were evacuated this morning when a fire broke out at a hotel in Bangkok.
Guests fled the eight-storey Prommitr Suites complex where a blaze erupted on the first floor at around 5:26 am local time.
Firefighters rushed to the scene in Soi Sukhumvit 39 and found smoke billowing out of the building.
Footage shows officers escorting tourists down a smoke-filled stairway. Other holidaymakers were seen lugging suitcases as they walked through the hotel car park.
The Khlong Toei Fire and Rescue Station said the fire was rapidly extinguished at 5:39 am, with no extensive damage caused.
One woman was treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire department said in a statement: 'A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire started inside a server room located on the first floor of the hotel. Fortunately, the fire spread only slightly and did not cause widespread damage. '
They added the exact cause of the fire was being determined.
Fires in Thailand are commonly caused by aging electrical infrastructure, extensive use of wood in construction, and regional heatwaves that can exacerbate fire risks.
Rapid fire response can also be hampered in densely packed neighbourhoods where narrow streets can delay firefighting efforts.
