HONG KONG, CHINA - AUG. 14, 2025: Closing arguments in the trial of Jimmy Lai, founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily newspaper, were postponed Thursday due to a severe storm in Hong Kong.
Judicial authorities said hearings could be canceled or delayed as the city faced extreme weather conditions. Members of the public waited outside the courthouse with umbrellas, hoping to hear Lai’s defense.
Lai faces charges of “conspiracy to collude with foreign forces” under Beijing-imposed national security legislation, as well as conspiring to publish “seditious” materials. If convicted, he could face life in prison.
The 76-year-old media tycoon’s trial began Dec. 18, 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to two counts of colluding with foreign forces and one count of sedition.
