The Turkish Presidency of Migration Management reported on Thursday, Aug. 14, that the returns have been conducted in a safe, voluntary, and dignified manner, with every step—from registration to transportation—carefully coordinated by authorities. Since 2016, the total number of Syrians who have voluntarily returned from Türkiye has reached 1,151,652, while the number of Syrians under temporary protection in the country currently stands at 2,543,711. Footage from the Voluntary Return Coordination Center in Istanbul’s Arnavutkoy Migration office showed Syrians completing their procedures before boarding buses bound for their homeland. Turkish migration officials emphasized that all logistical and administrative steps were carefully managed to facilitate a smooth transition. The returns come after significant political changes in Syria. Bashar al-Assad, who ruled the country for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in December 2024, marking the end of the Baath Party regime, in power since 1963. In January 2025, a new transitional administration was formed under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, raising hopes for stability and reconstruction in the war-torn country. Writing by Sibel Uygun
