Relieved passengers clapped when their plane landed safely during typhoon in Taiwan.

Terrified travellers aboard EVA Air Flight BR183 experienced nerve-wracking turbulence as the pilot attempted to land at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport amid typhoon Podul.

One passenger recalled that the Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner tried to touch down twice at the airport, but due to violent winds, the captain decided to divert and land at Taipei Songshan Airport, 40 kilometres away from Taoyuan.

She said: 'The flight was already delayed when departing from Narita, Japan. Later, as we approached the airport, the descent had to be slowed by 30 minutes for safety reasons.

'When we reached our first landing attempt, at around 300 meters, it was too shaky to land, so the captain immediately performed a go-around. During the first go-around, normal procedures required waiting 15 minutes before trying again. On the second attempt, we descended to about 130 meters, but the wind shear was so strong that landing was impossible, and the captain went up for another go-around.'

Many passengers reportedly experienced dizziness, while others became nauseous and vomited from the failed landing attempts.

Footage shows the aircraft descending onto the runway, and upon touchdown at Taipei Songshan Airport, passengers applauded the smooth landing on August 13.

The filmer expressed her gratitude saying: 'Huge respect to the captain. I've flown many times, but this was the first time I experienced such intense turbulence.

'The professional flight crew truly deserves a resounding round of applause. Thanks to them, we were able to travel safely abroad and return home. It's truly wonderful to have such dedicated crew members.'

Typhoon Podul swept across southern Taiwan, bringing wind speeds of up to 191 kph (118 mph). The system triggered widespread closures across the island and led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.

The Central Weather Administration reported that Podul made landfall in the southeastern city of Taitung at around 1 pm local time on Wednesday. The typhoon then moved across Taiwan's southern tip before entering the Taiwan Strait around three hours later.

Authorities said more than 8,000 residents were evacuated as a safety measure. One person remains missing, and at least 112 injuries have been reported.
