UNKNOWN LOCATION (AUGUST 14, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT "RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY" HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO — EDITORIAL USE ONLY) Russia and Ukraine exchanged 84 prisoners of war each in a swap facilitated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The ministry stated that the released Russian soldiers had been held in "territory controlled by the Kyiv regime" and were transported to Belarus, where they are receiving psychological and medical assistance. They will later be transferred to Russia for further treatment and rehabilitation at military medical facilities.

In return, Russia handed over 84 Ukrainian prisoners of war as part of the agreement. The UAE played a key role in mediating the exchange, though details of the negotiations were not disclosed.

Prisoner swaps between Moscow and Kyiv have occurred periodically since the start of the conflict in February 2022, with both sides emphasizing the importance of repatriating captured soldiers.
