Humanitarian airdrops continue as Gaza famine deepens under Israeli blockade and genocide (2)

PALESTINIAN MAN SPEAKING TO CAMERA GAZA, PALESTINE - AUGUST 14, 2025: Humanitarian airdrops continued over the Gaza Strip on Thursday, August 14, as famine conditions worsen across the besieged enclave under Israel’s months-long blockade and genocide. In central Gaza, crowds gathered west of the Nuseirat Refugee Camp, enduring sweltering heat for hours in hopes of securing food or other essentials. Some managed to reach the parachuted packages, but for many, the wait ended in disappointment. Gaza’s Health Ministry said four more people died of starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the famine-related death toll to 239, including 106 children, as the humanitarian crisis deepens. While airdrops have become a symbol of desperate relief efforts since July 16, aid groups and local authorities warn they carry significant risks and fall far short of needs. Packages have missed their intended targets, with some landing in the sea, restricted areas, or zones under Israeli control, while parachute failures have caused injuries and deaths. Palestinian officials and humanitarian groups say the method is far less effective than land deliveries and has caused chaos, damage, and deaths. According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, at least 23 people have been killed and 124 others injured by falling aid boxes since October 2023. The office said most packages have landed in areas under Israeli control or in neighborhoods forcibly emptied of residents, exposing anyone approaching them to the risk of being directly targeted. Previous drops, it added, have fallen into the sea, causing 13 drownings last year, or into crowded gatherings, making them both dangerous and ineffective. It renewed calls for all humanitarian aid, particularly food, baby formula, medicines, and medical supplies, to be delivered safely and in sufficient quantities through land crossings. Israel has kept all Gaza crossings closed since March 2, blocking aid convoys despite hundreds of trucks waiting at the border. Only small amounts have been allowed in, far below the level needed to avert famine. The Israeli army resumed its genocide in the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 10,251 people and injured 42,865 others, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold in January. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
