[Voiceover] In China, if you want a cold beverage during the summer months, you will probably need to buy some ice. While some cultures consume iced beverages all year long, Traditional Chinese Medicine says drinking icy water, or an icy beverage is best avoided. But when temperatures rise, and a warm soft drink just won’t cut it, people in China purchase literal plastic cups filled with ice cubes and pour their favorite beverage on top. Consumers say ice cups are essential during the summer. [Soundbite] Beijing resident: "I come by often to buy some - whenever I'm passing through. It's super convenient and I love that I can DIY everything myself." [Voiceover] The manager of this convenience store says they can sell upwards of 150 ice cups daily when it’s hot outside. Ice cup sales are also driving demand upstream. At a Guangzhou edible ice manufacturer, a newly upgraded intelligent production line is operating at full capacity. [Soundbite] Liang Chukun, marketing manager, edible ice manufacturer: "Our daily production capacity is now around 200 tons. Sales in the first half of the year have increased two to three times compared to the same period last year." [Voiceover] Most ice cups sold at convenience stores in China cost anywhere from around 30 cents to a dollar. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
