GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - AUGUST 15: Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are enduring severe shortages of water, food, and medicine while battling extreme summer heat, as Israel’s military offensive and blockade continue for the tenth month.
Displaced families living in makeshift tents face scorching temperatures, with the heat exacerbating already dire conditions. The lack of clean water, combined with collapsing healthcare infrastructure, has led to a surge in dehydration and waterborne diseases.
On July 29, UN experts condemned Israel’s deliberate denial of safe drinking water to Gaza’s population, calling it a violation of international law and a potential crime against humanity.
“Israel is using thirst as a weapon to kill Palestinians,” the experts stated. “Cutting off water and food is a silent but lethal bomb that kills mostly children and babies. The sight of infants dying in their mothers’ arms is unbearable. How can world leaders sleep while this suffering continues?”
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have destroyed 89% of Gaza’s water and sanitation infrastructure, leaving over 90% of households without reliable access to clean water. With fuel supplies nearly exhausted, humanitarian agencies have been forced to scale back critical operations, including water distribution.
With no electricity or clean water, Palestinian children have been seen swimming along Gaza’s coastline to escape the oppressive heat. However, even this temporary relief is overshadowed by the risk of disease from contaminated seawater due to destroyed sewage systems.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its military campaign, which has killed more than 61,700 Palestinians since October.
