NEW YORK — FDNY Marine 6 firefighters braved strong currents and dangerous debris to rescue a person trapped in the East River late Wednesday night near the Roosevelt Island Bridge.

Around 10 p.m., the crew found the individual pinned against broken pilings and clinging to a pipe conduit just above the waterline. A Marine 6 firefighter entered the water, secured the patient with a rescue torpedo, and began moving away from the structure when the current swept them under the boat’s bow.

The firefighter and patient were safely brought aboard thanks to precise piloting and coordinated teamwork. The patient, suffering from hypothermia, was transferred to EMS for care.
