Couple survives after being pinned under overturned 22-wheel truck
A couple miraculously survived being pinned under an overturned trailer truck in Thailand.
The pair were delivering bottles to a beverage factory when the truck allegedly lost control along Highway 3481 in Chachoengsao province today.
The vehicle loaded with glass bottles flipped over, blocking two lanes on the road.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene after being notified. They found the white Isuzu 22-wheeler lying upside-down, while inside the mangled cabin were driver Thanaphan Donphoonsai, 29, and his wife Patcharanan Harncherngchai, 28.
Responders lifted the cab and used cutting equipment to extract the couple from the carnage.
A rescue officer said: 'Ms. Patchanan Hancheangchai, 28, suffered abrasions and leg injuries from being crushed in the cab.
'Mr Thanapan Donphunthai, 29, also suffered back injuries. Both of them were rushed to the Bang Nam Priao Hospital.'
A colleague, who had been ahead of them in another truck, said they were headed to a Red Bull plant in Prachinburi when the accident occurred.
He said: 'I suspect Thanapan may have fallen asleep at the wheel. It was early in the morning when it happened.'
Police said they will question Thanapan further once he has recovered.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
