Bakersfield, United States - August 17, 2025 08/16/2025 07:10 pm GMT-0700 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – An investigation is underway after shots were exchanged between police and a suspect in southwest Bakersfield, triggering a SWAT standoff that ended with the suspect in custody, according to the Bakersfield Police Department. The incident began just after 7 p.m. when officers responded to a traffic hazard near Grandlakes Avenue north of Ming Avenue. The driver of the vehicle causing the hazard was located at a home in the 1400 block of Fieldspring Drive, where police said he opened fire as officers approached. No officers were struck. One officer returned fire during the incident, according to police. Officers pulled back and requested a SWAT response. Bakersfield police said tactical units from BPD and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office surrounded the residence. Initial reports indicated the suspect had multiple firearms, making threats toward officers. The suspect, Cain English, 43, was taken into custody just before 9:30 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained during the arrest. Bakersfield Fire Department and Hall Ambulance assisted with medical care.
