China: Sales of ice making products heat up in China
[Voiceover] In Beijing this summer, sales of ice making machines and related products are heating up. At one home appliance store in the city, counter-top ice makers that cost about 140 U.S. dollars are attracting attention. Shoppers say they’re great for entertaining, while the store manager says all ice-related products saw strong sales in July. [Soundbite] Shopper: "Ice is a summer essential. When friends come over on weekends for iced coffee or drinks, the demand really spikes - that's why I'm checking out these ice makers again." [Soundbite] Chen Rui, deputy manager, home appliance store in Beijing: "In July, sales of home appliances with ice-making functions saw a month-on-month increase of over 15 percent." [Voiceover] Refrigerators and freezers are also seeing sales rise this summer. [Soundbite] Feng Shuoli, Beijing Marketing Director, home appliance brand: "This ice-making fridge hit 14 million U.S. in sales in just 3 months. Another model lets you prep ice remotely via phone. And it’s not just fridges—ice-making water purifiers saw sales spike 260 percent last year." [Voiceover] According to data from Beijing-based consultancy All View Cloud, which specializes in home appliances, the retail sales volume of refrigerators in China last year reached 40 million units, a 5 percent increase from 2023.
