Gaza Strip: Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises to 62,004
The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 62,004, with 156,230 others injured since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on October 7, 2023, Gaza's health authorities said in a statement on Monday. Over the past 24 hours, Israeli attacks killed 60 Palestinian and injured 344 others, according to the statement. Of those casualties, 27 were killed and 281 injured while waiting to receive humanitarian aid. Since the U.S.- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began distributing aid in Gaza on May 27, a total of 1,965 aid seekers have been killed, with 14,701 others injured, the statement said. Thousands of Palestinians fled the northern part of Gaza City on Monday and headed towards Gaza City's western and southern parts as concerns mounted about an upcoming Israeli ground offensive. It came after the Israeli military announced on Sunday that it will soon launch the next phase of its operation in Gaza City, which could potentially lead to the forced displacement of about one million Palestinians. Palestinians are calling for protests in Gaza City, demanding an end to the war that has sparked a grave humanitarian crisis. They are also demanding Hamas to intensify negotiation efforts so as to avert the ground offensive by Israel. A senior Hamas official confirmed that the group had agreed to a new ceasefire proposal with Israel presented by the mediators. The source familiar with the matter said earlier Monday Hamas received the new proposal, which outlined a framework for starting negotiation on a permanent ceasefire. The proposal combines the separate plans put forward by Egypt and U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, including a 60-day ceasefire and releasing Israeli hostages in two batches.
