Phoenix, United States - August 19, 2025 08/19/2025 11:00 am GMT-0700 Phoenix A student died following a classroom fight that escalated into a stabbing at a Phoenix-area high school late Tuesday morning, the state's Department of Education confirmed. Phoenix police and fire crews responded to Maryvale High School, located on 59th Avenue south of Indian School Road, shortly before 11 a.m. The fight involved two male students, both of whom were transported to the hospital. One student sustained severe injuries and later died, while the other was treated for less serious injuries. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne expressed his condolences, stating, The death of a student as the result of a stabbing at Maryvale High School is a terrible tragedy. Schools must be safe places. Horne also praised the on-campus school safety officer, saying, "The officer responded immediately, rendered aid to the student and did his job well. This terrible incident reinforces my commitment to doing everything possible to make schools safe. A Phoenix Union High School District spokesperson confirmed there was an incident in a classroom and indicated that the school was placed under an active lockdown. However, police and school officials later assured that there is no present danger and that all other students and staff are safe.
