Kiruna, Sweden - August 19, 2025 Kiruna Church, renowned as one of Sweden&'s most beautiful and culturally significant wooden churches, is currently undergoing a historic relocation. The church is being moved in one piece to a new site about 5km away, situated between the cemetery and the new city center of Kiruna. This extraordinary event is taking place on August 19-20, 2025, as a centerpiece of the city&'s ongoing urban transformation prompted by ground instability caused by iron ore mining activities in the region. The move is a remarkable engineering feat—requiring extensive preparations, including widening roads, demolishing certain infrastructure, and constructing a meticulously planned relocation route. The church, which weighs approximately 600 tonnes (with the bell tower adding another 100 tonnes), is being transported using a specially designed hydraulic trailer at a speed of 0.5–1km per hour. The event has attracted significant public interest, with large screens set up around town and community celebrations organized to mark the occasion. This relocation, unprecedented in Sweden, involves not just the physical moving of the building but also delicate cultural and emotional considerations because the church holds deep religious, community, and historic significance, including connections to the local Sami people. The church is expected to reopen at its new location at the end of 2026 SHOTLIST Video of the move on 19 August. [Credit: X/AngryTheInch]
