Family stunned as glass door shatters as they walk through shopping mall
This is the shocking moment a family were injured when a glass door shattered as they were leaving a mall in Bangkok.
The family had just finished shopping and were returning to the car park of the Park Silom shopping centre on August 16.
CCTV footage showed two children, both six, pushing open the tempered glass door, only for it to shatter into thousands of tiny, sharp shards.
The metal door handles clattered to the floor as glass fragments rained down on the stunned family. The youngsters reportedly suffered minor foot and arm injuries, while their father had glass fly into his shirt.
The mother, Khun Mon, said: 'A department store employee came to check on us. I said we were sure we were pushing the door normally, not too hard. Before reaching the door, I warned my kids to be careful, not to run, and not to rush into the car park.'
She added that the mall sent a gift basket as an apology.
Jessada Denduangboripant, a professor at the Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Science, said tempered glass is an everyday material commonly used in car windows, doors, residential windows, and furniture.
He said: 'When tempered glass breaks, the shards are small, like corn kernels, and not sharp, so they are less likely to cause injuries. However, spontaneous breakage can occur due to several factors like minor damage during installation or stress as the frame changes size due to temperature changes and wind pressure.
'Internal defects, such as the formation of nickel sulfide clusters, can also cause breakage. Other causes include stress from excessive heat or the glass being too thin to withstand wind impact.'
On July 29, an office worker was rushed to the hospital after a tempered glass door shattered as she tried to enter her workplace in Bangkok.
Kanyarat, 44, was left with a severe thumb injury that required surgery. The 240,000 baht (5,460 GBP) procedure was covered by her insurance, and the building owner agreed to compensate her for the incident.
