VARIOUS OF DRONE SHOTS OF DESTROYED EASTERN GHOUTA AS SUN SETS OVER CITY DAMASCUS, SYRIA - AUGUST 13: Twelve years after the Assad regime carried out a chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta, more than 1,400 civilians — mostly women and children — are remembered as victims of one of the deadliest gas massacres in modern history.

The August 21, 2013 attack left thousands suffering from sarin exposure and marked a turning point in Syria’s civil war.

Residents of Eastern Ghouta endured a five-year siege before being forcibly displaced to the north, with many only beginning to return after the Baath regime collapsed in December 2024.

Under Syria’s transitional government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, the region has reopened to humanitarian missions and war crimes investigations.

Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963. A new transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was formed in January.
