Abu Ghali, who holds a fine arts degree and a master’s in psychology, once taught handicrafts and calligraphy at Nasr School in Gaza City. Now displaced with his wife and five children in a tent in the northern Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, he laments the loss of more than 20 years of work. Ghali said he never thought he would one day have to use the frames of the paintings he worked on for years as firewood With fuel and cooking supplies cut off, many Gazans have resorted to burning wood, plastic, or belongings to survive. Like other artists, Abu Ghali eventually turned to his own work, using it to cook and bake bread for his children. Israel’s restrictions on aid deliveries by land and air continue to exacerbate the crisis, leaving families like Abu Ghali’s in desperation. Israel has killed more than 62,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
