A fierce monsoon storm uprooted trees and toppled market stalls in southern Thailand.

Torrential rains pounded the region, sending vendors scrambling as their tent collapsed in Phatthalung on Wednesday.

One person was reportedly injured by the falling metal frame, while others battled to keep their goods from getting wet.

A large tree had also fallen onto two empty sedans when it was blown down by the tempest. Officials have cleared the obstruction using chainsaws.

Authorities said similar damage was reported in neighbouring provinces, where uprooted trees crashed down onto homes and roads. Emergency crews have been dispatched to assist residents and carry out urgent repairs.

Government officials said they were surveying the full extent of the damage.

The Thai Meteorological Department said a weak southwest monsoon was affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, while a low-pressure system was covering upper Vietnam.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
