2. VARIOUS OF DRONE SHOTS OF FIREWORKS LIGHTING UP SKY OVER ZAMALKA NEIGHBORHOOD TO MARK TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY OF CHEMICAL ATTACK DAMASCUS, SYRIA - AUGUST 21: In Eastern Ghouta, Damascus, Syrians gathered overnight on Thursday, August 21, to mark the twelfth anniversary of the Assad regime’s chemical attack that killed more than 1,400 civilians.
Residents of Zamalka, one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods, lit fireworks at 2.30 a.m., the time the sarin gas strike was launched in 2013.
Crowds gathered on Zamalka Bridge, chanting slogans demanding accountability for those responsible.
Prayers were held in mosques across Ghouta for the victims, as families remembered the thousands who were poisoned by toxic gas, most of them women and children.
The chemical massacre left a deep scar on the community, which later endured years of siege and displacement before returning after the fall of the Baath regime in December 2024.
Human rights monitors say the Assad regime carried out more than 200 chemical weapons attacks during the civil war, making the Eastern Ghouta massacre one of the deadliest in modern history.
