Dozens of football supporters were injured during clashes at a match in Argentina.

Argentine side Independiente and Chilean club Universidad de Chile were level at 1-1 when fights broke out in the stands in Buenos Aires in the second half on Wednesday night, August 20.

The game was abandoned as officials battled to control the unrest. Local media reported that two fans were stabbed, and one has life-threatening injuries. Dozens of others were injured.

Police reportedly arrested more than 100 fans.

South American football's governing body (CONMEBOL) said the match had been cancelled due to 'the lack of security guarantees from the local club and local security authorities'.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement: 'I strongly condemn the shocking violence which led to the cancellation of the Copa Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile.

'Violence has no place in soccer - players, fans, staff, officials and everyone who enjoys our beautiful game should be able to do so without fear.'
