Seven arrested in nationwide crackdown on online abortion pill trade
Seven people were arrested for allegedly selling abortion pills online amid a nationwide crackdown on the illegal medication.
The suspects were detained as police raided their homes in Chiang Mai and Lamphun in northern Thailand on August 20.
More than 3,000 items were seized from three warehouses, including powerful abortion drugs, pregnancy kits, and food supplements.
The alleged distributors were identified by police as Namaoi, 43, Lampha, 49, Sirinapha, 38, Ranthom, 57, Patchareeporn, 26, and Nanthawut, 36, and Lao woman Layphone, 28, who will face charges of 'selling modern medicine without a permit and selling unregistered medicine'.
Police said the raids were conducted after a pregnant woman who had taken the pills suffered a uterine rupture and severe bleeding that left her in the hospital.
The drugs were later traced to the gang, which reportedly marketed their products across multiple social media platforms. To appear credible, they falsely claimed that a female doctor was on hand for phone consultations.
Authorities said they initially had trouble tracking the suspects as they had used mule accounts to accept payments, and had shipping companies deliver orders.
The Consumer Protection Police Division 4 said: 'We will continue to expand the investigation and make arrests after this operation.'
Selling prescription medicine without a licence in Thailand is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 10,000 Baht, while selling unregistered drugs carries a maximum penalty of three years or a 5,000 Baht fine.
