- ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE — AUG. 23, 2025: Ukrainians living in Istanbul, Türkiye, gathered on Saturday, Aug. 23, to protest the capture of Ukrainian soldiers during the war with Russia.

The group chanted Ukraine’s national anthem and carried signs and banners during the protest, which was attended by Ukraine’s Consulate General in Istanbul, Roman Nedilskyi.

Nedilskyi told an Anadolu reporter that Ukraine is willing to do everything for peace and is open to dialogue and negotiation.

A former Ukrainian soldier, who had been captured during the war and later freed through an exchange, said Türkiye has repeatedly shown its solidarity with Ukraine through diplomatic initiatives and expressed gratitude for that support.

Intense diplomatic efforts by US President Donald Trump to mediate a settlement for the nearly 3 1/2-year long Russia-Ukraine war are ongoing.

These efforts included a key summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week, and the subsequent meeting in the Oval Office on Monday between Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders.

Russia started its "special military operation" on Feb. 24, 2022 and claimed that it is aimed at protecting people in the eastern region of Ukraine.
