Camogli, Italy - August 21, 2025 Firefighter divers and specialized units from multiple state forces descended up to 18 meters underwater to carry out essential maintenance on the famed “Christ of the Abyss” statue off the coast of Camogli. The operation was coordinated by the Superintendence for Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for Liguria, and involved collaboration between the national fire corps, police, Carabinieri, Navy, Coast Guard, and Guardia di Finanza. Using a high-pressure water cleaner, the divers removed marine biological encrustations from the statue without touching the sculpture directly. This work is crucial not only for aesthetics but also to prevent biodeterioration caused by marine organisms. The “Christ of the Abyss” has been described by the Daily Mail as the most breathtaking underwater beauty in the world, making its preservation a priority for cultural and environmental authorities.
