Crockett, United States - August 20, 2025 On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, deputies from the Houston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a severe two-vehicle wreck on SH 21 West outside Crockett, Texas, where one occupant was pinned inside a burning car. Deputies immediately rendered aid, contained the fire, and worked to free the trapped victim. With assistance from bystanders and other agencies, the deputies successfully removed the individual from the burning vehicle and began administering first aid to both victims. Sheriff Zak Benge highlighted the importance of equipping patrol vehicles with fire extinguishers, noting that deputies went through three extinguishers during the rescue. “Without those fire extinguishers the victim would have been severely burned or worse, burned alive,” Benge said. He commended the officers for acting decisively under extreme stress and thanked bystanders for their help. The sheriff emphasized that the video from the scene shows the deputies’ calm and effective response during a life-and-death situation. Authorities are now working to recharge the used fire extinguishers and secure additional units for patrol vehicles.
