Pacu Jalur was first established as a significant mode of transportation for residents of Rantau Kuantan, a region located near the Kuantan River, in the seventeenth century. The Kuantan River was the lifeblood of the area, and the people had little idea about land transportation. It was used for everything, from transporting goods to fishing, washing clothes, and even taking baths.

Jalur literally means "boat" in the native language of Riau. Many people used the boat to carry goods like bananas and sugar cane, due to its capacity to hold 40 to 60 passengers. Different boats emerged throughout time, each adorned with its own unique combination of decorative elements, including intricate carvings, colourful scarves, intricate rigging, and pretty accoutrements.

Location
The Pacu Jalur Festival is held annually at Tepian Narosa, Teluk Kuantan, Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia. The race takes place along the stream of the Batang Kuantan River, which serves as the natural arena for this traditional longboat competition.

Time
The event takes place every year in late August, usually in conjunction with Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations. i2024 it was held from August 20 to 24.

Main Highlights
The festival is not only a thrilling boat race but also a vibrant cultural celebration:
The Race: Longboats, locally called jalur, measure between 25–40 meters and carry up to 60 rowers working in perfect rhythm.
Cultural Attractions: Visitors can enjoy traditional music, dances, parades, handicraft exhibitions, and local culinary showcases.
Unique Tradition: Each boat features a child dancer (Anak Coki), who performs at the bow to inspire and boost the team’s spirit. This role has recently gone viral internationally, bringing global attention to the festival.
