The new talks will be held with the regional government on August 28 to resolve the contract dispute. The Madrid Autonomous Community Forest Firefighters (BRIF) said they restarted their strike after failing to reach an agreement following their July 15 – August 15 protest. Firefighters, who reportedly earn an average monthly salary of €1,200–1,300, say they work under extreme conditions with little rest while risking their lives battling wildfires. Firefighters’ labor conditions have drawn criticism in Spain, which has been grappling with forest fires since early August. It is estimated that a total of 391,581 hectares (967,616 acres) have been burned in Spain so far this year, with 350,000 hectares burned in the last 13 days, the daily El Pais reported last week, citing the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).
