This is the terrifying moment an enraged elephant attacked a car that was passing through a toll booth in northern India.

Shocking footage shows the aggressive jumbo striking a black sedan with its trunk on the Dehradun–Haridwar highway in Uttarakhand on August 10.

The driver managed to speed away, though the vehicle's rear windshield was left shattered. The tusker then continued to cross the busy road.

No injuries were reported.

Locals said wild elephants are seen near the toll plaza almost every day, posing a risk to motorists. Many have called for urgent action from the authorities.

The Indian sub-continent has at least 30,000 wild elephants - more than any other country and approximately 60 per cent of the world's entire Asian elephant population.
