This is the shocking moment a car was swallowed by a sinkhole on a road in China.

Dashcam footage shows the white hatchback navigating the motorway when the asphalt collapsed under the vehicle's weight in Hefei, Anhui.

The four-wheeler, carrying four people, can be seen plunging into the hole on the afternoon of August 25.

Passing motorists stopped to check on the passengers, while nearby locals reportedly called the municipal authorities for help.

Local media reported that all four individuals were safely rescued from the vehicle.

Authorities later hoisted the car out and removed it hours after the incident.

A motorist following behind the fallen vehicle said: 'I was scared to death when I saw the car fall.'

The cause of the road collapse is still under investigation.
