United States - August 23, 2025 Episode 31 of the ongoing Kīlauea summit eruption produced nearly 13 hours of lava fountaining from August 22 to 23, 2025. USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists observed a lava fountain reaching 1,000 ft (300 meters) from the north vent, feeding a lava channel and depositing tephra across the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The south vent and other intermediate vents also erupted during this episode. With permission from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, USGS scientists conducted a monitoring overflight of the eruption site on August 25. They visited the crater floor to collect samples of material from episode 31. Geochemical analysis of these samples will help scientists better understand the processes driving the episodic eruption, which has been ongoing since December 23, 2024.
