Four dead and five missing from Typhoon Kajiki landslides in northern Thailand
Four people were killed and five are missing as Typhoon Kajiki triggered landslides in northern Thailand.
The residents were buried under debris after heavy rains sent muddy torrents sweeping into villages in Chiang Mai on August 27.
The Mae Chaem District Office said two Thais and two Shan migrant workers were killed, while five other Shan people were missing.
Fifteen were injured, two of whom were in critical condition.
Footage shows the carnage after the wave of wet earth flattened homes. Disaster response crews cleared the scene during rescue operations.
Siwakorn Buapong, Chiang Mai deputy governor, said: 'The landslide and flash flood affected two villages in Mae Suek Subdistrict.
'These villages contain around 500 households and a population of approximately 2,000. Heavy rain last night caused a mass of water and mud from the mountain to flow into the villages, causing damage to homes. There were also injuries and deaths.'
Residents were ordered to evacuate the area. The district office set up a temporary shelter at a local school.
The Chiang Mai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office said relief goods were being distributed to affected villagers.
Vietnam has recently been battered by Typhoon Kajiki, which made landfall on Monday, leaving at least seven people dead, one missing, and 34 others injured. Officials said more than 7,000 homes were damaged during the storm.
On August 27, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said Kajiki had weakened into a low-pressure system over northern Thailand. Despite the storm's dissipation, heavy rainfall was expected to continue in the region for at least two days.
